Nobody has ever been paid to compile what people already know, so the decisions that depend on it, on risk, on impact, on the security conditions on the ground, get made without it. Pay for that knowledge instead and the incentive flips: whoever holds it now has a reason to make it legible, verifiable and current. That is the case for building this now.

In frontier economies the knowledge the world depends on is already there, in heads, on paper, and in disconnected silos, in places its buyers will never visit. A market qualifies on those three conditions, never on where it sits: geography follows from them and never defines them. Each of these markets was, on its own, too small to justify a system built for it alone. None of them ever needed one each: the same rails, customised to a market rather than rebuilt for it, reach all of them.

Previously stigmatised geographies carry a penalty long after the reason for it has changed, because nobody went back to check. Once the record exists, closing that gap releases the outsized opportunity the stigma suppressed: these places were never priced on what is actually there.

Regulation, AI and the energy transition all need the same asset: verified data from the origin.

The value chains the world depends on in these economies, critical minerals, carbon, food, finance, are what generate the demand. They need the origin priced, and priced on evidence.

This demand is not hypothetical: buyers already pay for the answer the hard way. They fly an expert to one site, and the answer is stale before the invoice clears. The buyers listed here are that same budget, waiting for a better product.

What DAAC prices for them is the data itself, not the ore it describes. The value chain is the reason the data is worth paying for; the asset on sale is the record.

And a new kind of buyer is arriving: an AI agent acting on the frontier has no instinct to fall back on, so without data that carries its provenance it hallucinates its way through. None of that compounding matters unless it points somewhere. Search organised the world’s published information. It never reached the places where the information is not published: the mine sites, communities and value-chain origins the world now has to price. DAAC’s ambition is the definitive record of those places, compiled by the people who live there and owned by them throughout.

Frontier economies are where traditional information infrastructure failed, and that is exactly why the new model starts there: nothing already standing in its place, and everything still to index. Where the old model sends an expert with a notebook, this one is already resident.

The supply side is not a data centre, and not a scraper. It is digital ecosystems rooted where the answers are: apps that digitise what people on the ground know. Hubs that consolidate the public record. Closed systems finally made legible. And sharing has an incentive at last: every holder can see where their data goes, set the terms, and get paid, so the supply grows instead of drying up.
